Salmon Leather

The salmon leather used in Koselig products is sourced directly from a tannery in Iceland. This tannery works in partnership with the Nordic fishing industry to turn salmon skin, a common byproduct, into durable, high-quality leather. Not only does this result in reduced waste from the fishing industry, but the tannery is also operated using 100% renewable energy, resulting in a CO2-neutral operation. I am excited to introduce this unique material into my work!

SAMI BRACELETS

HISTORY

The Sami people are the indiginous people of northern Scandinavia (Sapmi). Traditionally these bracelets were a symbol of friendship. Only about 2,600 Sami still live their lives as reindeer herders, but the majority of the far North region is used for raising reindeer.

SUSTAINABILITY

I am proud to support the Sami and reindeer trade in Sapmi (Northern Scandinavia). This trade is known as one of the rare environmentally sustainable meat industries in Scandinavia. The reindeer are semi-domesticated, but a natural part of the ecosystem, roaming and eating all naturally occuring lichen and vegetation. The carbon footprint of these animals is very small. Only a set number are harvested each year (primarily for meat) and the whole animal is used. This is where I source the high quality, hand-tanned and dyed reindeer leather and crafted antler buttons used for Koselig Design bracelets.

All supplies used in the creation of Koselig Design Sami-inspired reindeer leather & pewter jewelry are sourced from a small village in Northern Sweden.  Reindeer Leather Bracelets take anywhere from 5-20 hours to make, depending on design and size.  These beautiful pieces are comprised of high quality reindeer leather, reindeer shed antler button, and a hand-braided alloy of pewter and silver.

Koselig

Pronounced: (Koos-uh-lee)

The Norwegian word "Koselig" doesn't have a direct English translation. Much like the Danish "hygge," koselig encompasses a feeling deeply rooted in the people of Scandinavia. Koselig communicates a philosophy of positive feelings and experiences, and an innate sense of friendship, happiness, community, and warmth. Even in the bitter cold of winter, koselig can be found in a roaring fire, coffee with an old friend, a leisurely family dinner, or a pair of wooly mittens. At Koselig Design, each piece is created with this philosophy at heart. These bracelets are meant to give you a feeling of rich tradition, family connection, and unique beauty.
